Geneviève (Catherine Deneuve), a charming young woman working in her mother’s umbrella boutique, falls in love with Guy (Nino Castelnuovo), a
handsome car mechanic. Their tender romance is abruptly interrupted when Guy is drafted to fight in the Algerian War. Left behind and
pregnant, Geneviève ultimately marries Roland (Marc Michel), a kind and wealthy jeweller. Told entirely through music, this poignant musical
explores the beauty and heartbreak of love, choice, and fate. Set during the height of the French New Wave (late 1950s to mid-60s), Les
Parapluies de Cherbourg
is formally bold and visually striking. The entire dialogue is sung, the color palette is vividly expressive, and the narrative avoids
traditional resolutions—hallmarks of the New Wave movement. This film also marked a turning point in the career of Catherine Deneuve,
helping to launch her as an international star.
