Synopsis:
Miss Lewly moves to Halifax in 1863. She is there to seek out Lieutenant Pinson, with whom she is madly in love, but who does not love her. No matter how often he makes this clear to her, she continues to pursue him, even though she knows he has a mistress. Miss Lewly is actually Adèle Hugo, the poet’s second daughter. She tries at all costs to marry him, causing Pinson’s marriage to another woman to fail. Adèle’s mother dies and Pinson leaves for Barbados; she follows him. Taken in by Mrs. Baa, who alerts the Hugo family, she is sent back to France and committed to an asylum.
